This weekend was a really good time and a wonderful way to start a vacation.  That's right, as of Friday night I'm on vacation for two weeks!  Yay!

Wonderful weekend.  I enjoyed it so much.  Today I head off to FL for (almost) two weeks of resting and recharging in warm, sunny FL and I get to see Monique again after her being gone for a week.  Yay!

Things are looking good.
- It's Friday.  Work Hell is almost done!  Yay!
- I finished the character creation portion of the 7 Virtues database last night.  It accurately tracks race expenditure, headers (including pre-reqs and exclusions), skills (same as headers *and* the wonky 2:1 CP expenditure ratio for core skills).  Now all I have to do is get it to spit out the HTML code for the character pages, but worse case that should be a couple of hours.  Printing out character cards will be a snap.  Reports on the wiki site for staff each event will be a breeze.
- House is clean and laundry is done.  This is good because...
- Monique comes home tonight after a week in MD for work.  YAY!
- Off to Nashua tomorrow to see parents
- Couples' massages, facials and jacuzzi at the hotel spa (shhhh! It's a secret.  Monique doesn't know, but she doesn't read LJ anyway.  "Massive waste of time!")
- [livejournal.com profile] thedeviantangel  's wedding... oh, and [livejournal.com profile] silway  's too.  ;-)
- Hang out time with friends at wedding and reception

Promises to be a good weekend.

Not much time, so for now, just a short overview of the NERO weekend.

Friday night I got to the site in a pretty foul mood and was not feeling up to playing at all, so I went to bed before game even started.  I figured I'd start Saturday off well rested in a better frame of mind.

This strategy worked pretty well and Saturday morning I went out in a recurring NPC role to push along the plot a little.  Of course that all meant that I didn't get into game as Kumir until Saturday around noontime and therefore I wasn't really invested in any of the plots.  I did participate in the puzzle/riddle portion of the tourney with my team and we took the colors presentation.  The highlight of the weekend (for me) was the slaver plot in which one of Kumir's sons was introduced.  He was played by [livejournal.com profile] agraitear.  I can't imagine anyone playing the part better.  This turned a kind of "eh" event into a really good event.

Dinner after was a lot of fun.  I always enjoy post event time with people.  I wish I could do it more often.

On a really positive ending note, I got home to Monique's news that she met with a dietician this weekend for a couple of hours and she will be starting a new diet as soon as the food comes in (in the next couple of days).  This is the same plan agraiter used on which he lost and has kept off a lot of weight.  I have high hopes for this and I'm really ecstatic that she finally took action.  Yay!

The last five days have been wonderful.  Five solid nights of sleep were good for resting.  I got several things done on my personal 'to do' list.  I basically did what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it.  I barely looked at work emails.  i spent Friday night with some of the best friends.  I went out to a really good movie with Monique and her sister.  It was all just restful and fun and glorious.  I think about two weeks of that would be perfect right now.  Oh well, back to reality.  Have a good week all.

I'll bet you're getting tired of reading about this stupid ERP project.  I assure you, I'm far more sick of it than you are.  We were here until 10:00 last night.  We finally managed to kick off the lengthy process we hoped to have kicked off before leaving the night before.  The corollary to Murphy's Law, "There's always one more bug", is absolutely true.  Thank goodness for [livejournal.com profile] sans_peur .  She's been a Godsend through all this and I couldn't have done it without her.

However, I had to drive home afterwards because I hadn't packed for the weekend and I'm leaving right from work today to go down to sunny (but no less frigid) VA for some relaxation and comaraderie and then a day with my wonderful wife who I haven't seen in almost a week.  So good riddance to another week of ERP woe.

Fairly low key.  We slept in late both days and by late, I mean 9:00.  For me, that's like throwing half the day away, but Monique and I both needed it badly.

We didn't get much work done on the database project.  We wasted a lot of time.  We were both very lethargic and it was hard working up enthusiasm for it.  I guess we're both pretty much burned out right now.

We had our first flute choir rehearsal last night, 10 people.  That was an all time high and we had at least two people missing.  It looks like a promising year and we already have three jobs lined up.  That was very encouragin.

Monique and I spent most of the weekend at Foxwoods.  We went to play bingo Saturday and Sunday with her mom and dad and her sister Lise and her husband Mark.  We also did a little gambling on the slot machines.  We certainly didn't win anything, but thanks to a last minute $300 gain on Monique's part on the Wheel of Fortune machine, we managed to minimize our donations to the Pequot tribe.

On the bright side, since we played bingo on the video machines, I got a fair amount of reading done.  I just wish they'd let you bring laptops in so you could actually get something productive done while you're playing.

I finished the first draft of the Madrigal character generation worksheet with the Beta 8 rules last night.  I sent it out to the Madrigal list.  If you wanted it and didn't get it, let me know and I'll email it to you.  If you find errors, please let me know and I'll correct them.

Have a good week.

This week is going to be a living Hell.  One of my three tech support guys is out.  Since he's the guy I've delegated two daily responsibilities to, that means I get them back for this week.  This is one of those weeks where I have 8:30 to 500 ERP implementation sessions and I get to do my regular work before and after those hours.

So where is the Woo-hoo aspect of this?  I just found out my life will be a tiny bit less sucky because the ERP session has been canceled for today.  One of the other 3 members of the team has to cover order entry for her employee that's out.  The second of the other three is out today for jury duty and the final member is finishing the financial month end close.  We all lose: Win!  How's that for optimism?

Quick weekend update as long as I'm here.  We slept in both days this week, one day until 9:00.  I'm talking serious sleeping in, at least for me.  We went to see two movies Saturday night, 'Dark Knight' and 'Mamma Mia'.  Sunday we got some time in on the database project, about 6 hours all told for the weekend.  Not exactly the 16 or so we were hoping for.

I planned on working on Monique's database project all weekend.  How did that go, you might ask?

Saturday, we had a long, leisurely breakfast and talked about a fairly complex, scope creeping aspect of the project for a rather long time.  Then when we went upstairs to work, I had issues with virtual memory and performance that have been plaguing me for a while.  I am in dire need of a new PC.  This one is 5 years old now and maxed out on important things like memory.  Let's just say the rest of my day went into making my machine work better in the hopes that  Sunday it would work better for me.

Chris and Amy asked Monique to watch Elijah Saturday night so they could go out.  We decided to just watch a movie after dinner before going back to work.  Yeah, that didn't work so well either.  We watched 3 movies.  Guess how much work got done?  However, it was relaxing and a nice change of pace.

Sunday, as we were contemplating getting out of bed to do work, we started talking about Monique's sister Lise, who has been in the hospital for a couple of days up in New London CT, about an hour and a half away.  I asked her if we were going to go visit her.  It led to a talk of priorities and how ours are a little out of whack, since we've put work over family.  Guess where we went?  If you guessed the hospital, you're right.  We got home right around 6:00.  Monique was really tired and laid down for a nap.  I decided to read my emails, catch up on LJ, fun stuff like that while she napped.  About 7:30, she wasn't awake, I was tired, I went to bed.  Guess how much work got done?  That's right, essentially none.

However, for some reason, I'm feeling pretty darned refreshed this morning!  :-)

My son Nick, his wife Nellie and their son Jason have been here since last Wed.  Monique wanted a big family get together for the 4th of July, so we bought their plane tickets.  They're with us through tomorrow.  Monique went up to NH with them on Thursday to get a few extra visits in, including with my mom who refuses to go to the brother's house right now for reasons of her own.

I went up early on the 4th with Chris, Amy and Elijah.  The day got off a little rough, but things ended up going ok after all.  We ended up with 18 people including some people I hadn't seen in about 9 years.

Yesterday we took Jason to his first movie in the theatres.  We went to see Wall E.  He was pretty good for an almost 3 year old right up until about 5 minutes from the end where he'd clearly had enough sitting still.

The movie itself was typically Pixar cute.  Not their best work, but quite good.

My mother always said, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".  I guess I'm going to leave this post at that.

Friday night I was at work until midnight.  My successor's successor for the NERO update position (Perdue), came down to Marlin for training.  Unfortunately, he was 2 to 2 1/2 hours later than he was supposed to be.  Then we had database and computer problems so we got off to a slow start.  I figure we got about 1/3 of the way through everything he needs to know.  We'll get together again before an event to go through pre-event procedures.  The good news is that you generally only have to tell him something once.  He also took a copy of the procedures manual I created for my successor.

Saturday I spent some time hunting down the problems with the character database and talking Perdue through the fix on that.  I hate phone support.

And I finally managed to complete and post my NERO weekend write-up.  I've only been writing it in little pieces for two weeks now.

Monique had asked me for information about projected growth rates on the database I'm designing for her.  I simulated it by adding several thousand records in 1000 chunk increments and monitoring the size of the database.  This took several hours to design the test data, emulate the actual import and do the measurements.  Monique was frustrated with this use of time, but I couldn't come up with a better way to give her the numbers.

Sunday was almost entirely spent on database design (except for a quick trip right after breakfast for us to get haircuts).  The db work was pretty fruitful and I'm happy with the actual progress I made on it this time.  Monique had a non-work project keeping her busy, so while we were together in the same room a lot, we weren't distracting each other from our projects because they weren't related.

We finished off the weekend with a couple episodes of BG.  We're about 2/3 of the way through season 3.
