Non-Madrigal weekend
So Madrigal happened this weekend, but for a variety of reasons I wasn't there and I'm both happy and sad about it. Sad because of course, I missed Madrigal. However, on Friday night at 9:27 when I turned out the light, already exhaused and unable to stay awake, I was pretty happy I wasn't about to spend 4 - 6 more hours awake. I'm going to treat this like a show that opens in the "middle" and then subtitles it with, "24 hours earlier".
Monique had been having bad abdominal pain for most of the past week and it had escalated to the point where she was talking about seeking medical help. She's really bad about this, so you know it's bad when she's talking like that. She was supposed to see her infectious disease doctor on Thursday but started pushing to be seen two days before that. She was denied an earlier appointment for both days and just lived with it until Thursday. On Thursday afternoon (5:00-ish) she sees the doctor who tells her she should have gone to the emergency room to be checked days ago (duh!) and then sends her there for tests. She has an abscess and is admitted.
Friday morning I called work and told them I'd be WFH. Normally that's working from home, but Friday it was working from hospital.
Monique was taken into surgery and had an orange sized abscess removed. There was an infected suture from an earlier surgery at the bottom. This surgery had to have taken place at least 6 years and this is the kind of suture that doesn't cause abscesses, but apparently Monique is special. They also found Mercer's staph infection and something else that had yet to be identified. She's been in the hospital since in isolation (for the infection, not for behavior I suspect). With any luck she'll come home today. They're leaving it open to heal from the inside out, like the last one which took over 18 months to heal. They should be deciding today whether she'll have a wound-vac machine or just go with visiting nurses. Anyway, that's pretty much the background for the rest of my weekend because of course I was at the hospital the entire day Friday and several hours on Saturday and Sunday.
So, yeah Friday night i was exhausted and collapsed into bed at 9:27 and we're now back to the opening of the story (in case you've actually been following the plot here). I slept 10 hours Friday night. As you can see, I wouldn't have been much good at a LARP this weekend anyway. I was wiped. I slept in 9 1/2 hours on Saturday night, not really a regular LARP schedule.
Saturday morning I took the car in for its regular maintenance and did my regular Saturday weigh-in at the weight loss center two blocks from there while it was being done. Just as a high point to the weekend, I was down two pounds from last week. That's 17.4 pounds in 9 weeks. Another 8 pounds I'll be at my target weight, hopefully in 4 - 6 weeks.
The complicating factor of the weekend is Chris' job and Elijah. Chris has a new job at Home Depot and works a lot on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, his days off from school. So we normally watch Elijah during that time. There's no way in the world I'm keeping a four year old at the hospital for more than a 15 minute visit at a time. That's not fair to him and it's a pain in the neck beside. So Saturday mid-afternoon, Chris dropped him off at the hospital on his way to work. He did a quick visit with Monique and then we went home. I wanted to take him to the park, but it was raining off and on Saturday afternoon, so we just went home. Since Sunday was supposed to be a lot nicer, I promised him we'd go to the park on Sunday. Elijah was being kind of insistent on watching The Avengers and we obviously had a lot of time to kill, so we took to watching the various associated movies. We got through Iron Man (he LOOOVES Iron Man), Hulk and about half of IM2 before bed time.
Sunday I went to the hospital early to spend a few hours with Monique on Mothers Day (yes, I did remember to call my mother and my mother-in-law) before getting Elijah around 11:15. We went to the park and walked about 2 miles in the woods and around the lake, stopping in the middle to play for a while on the playground. We built in some nature lessons on various plants and animals and he was doing pretty well with that. We went to the movies to see the Croods (a little corny, but hysterically funny for adults for some of the over-the-kids-heads humor). I totally blew the diet Sunday with cheese sticks, hot dogs, pizza, bufffalo chicken and ice cream this weekend. After the movie Elijah and I went to an ice cream parlor and then had a little more time so spent it at a park near there.
I promised Monique sushi for Mothers Day and damned if I wasn't going to deliver, hospital or no. Elijah and I picked up sushi and brought it to the hospital where her best friend Pam (also a sushi fanatic) joined her for about 3 1/2 hours of sushi and talk. Elijah and I went home while they did that and watched the second half of Iron Man 2 and had the popcorn neither of us had room for at the movie theatre and then bath (for him) and bed.
And this morning my weekend ended with finding a tick on my stomach. Awesome... not. It came out easily and had clearly barely started its dirty work, so it shouldn't be an issue, but ick. Anyway, now to work. With any luck I'll get out early today to go take Monique home.
I hope everyone's Madrigal (or Numina) weekend was awesome. Have a great week.
