Fun weekend
Monique and I ran a bunch of errands Saturday morning to prep for her departure for an all expense paid, one week trip tor Ireland, Now if only I were going with her and she wasn't going to spend the whole week at work. :-(
After loading up the van with all of my haunted house gear, I headed up to Nashua about 2:00 for the 2020 Vision Quest charity dinner Saturday night. I was a full 1/2 hour ahead of schedule, so when I got to Nashua to pick up my mom, I stopped to check out a haunted house that was advertised on the highway. I figured it might be open and if so, maybe I could pick up some ideas. As you can tell from my earlier packing activities, I'm already well in the mood for the holiday.
Amusingly enough, the haunted house was in the building I used to work in in Nashua. I used to be afraid to go in then, so I didn't think anything was going to be scarier than that. ;-) The place was closed however and there were no signs of hours, so I tried the door and it was open. I went in and looked around for people. There was a haunted house sound track playing and lights were on, so I figured someone must be around somewhere. The setup was definitely very cool. It must have cost them a fortune to set it up; absolutely awesome. I finally found a girl talking on her cell phone. When she finished I found out the place was open from 6:30 - midnight, so I decided than and there that if I was out on time, I'd be back that night.
I went to my mom's and changed for the dinner and off we went. It was a nice time talking to my mom just the two of us and even having wasted time, we were still at the country club an hour early. I helped set up some, checked out the auction items, met a few people associated with NHAB and chatted with Randy some.
The dinner itself was pretty good. The presentation was cool. Randy is a pretty dynamic speaker. I had a great time chatting with friends and running bidding wars on a couple of auction items. I one two of the wars, for a leather bound journal and an in-home one hour Swedish massage for Monique. I paid too much money for them, but it all goes to a good cause.
About the time the dancing started and the music levels went up, mom and I left. Neither of us cares for that, it was getting late and I had a haunted house to get to. After getting mom home, I headed off to said haunted house.
The sound had changed from the afternoon. It had gone from creepy haunted house sounds to rock music. I was wondering what the hell was up with that until I saw the line of people inside waiting to get into the actual haunted house. I will start by saying that it would have taken the combined ages of any three people in that line to reach my age. This apparently was the 16 year old couples attraction of the season and the whole thing, at 11:00 on a Saturday night, was geared for 16 year olds. That's not to say the whole thing wasn't cool, just that I was quite out of place.
Once we got into the actual haunted house, the music was much less an issue. It was huge, built inside a giant warehouse. The lights, sounds and effects were quite disorienting. Actors in costumes came at you from the most unexpected places and sound and motion activated animatronics really kept things jumping, especially the young girls, jumping into their boyfriends arms that is. The girls were clearly the favored targets of the actors and more than once I had once run into me, step on my feet and even caught one as she fell backwards. This was the hazard of being in the back of the line. The bright side is that nothing really targeted me so I was free to watch things for ideas. This isn't to say that I didn't jump twice, but I certainly wasn't in a constant state of agitation and screaming. It was a good time, but I didn't get out of there until almost midnight.
I got to Doal and Angus' parents' house around 12:30 and stayed up and chatted with JJ and Doal. After Angus and Nicole came in from NPCing Valhalla we stayed up and chatted some more until I was ready to fall asleep. I was expecting a couch and got not only a nice comfy bed but one with a heated blanket. It was fantastic. I slept like a log.
In the morning, after everyone was up and ready, we went out to Applebees for "breakfast". We talked there for a couple of hours. It was absolutely delightful, so nice to be able to talk LARP guilt free, well, unless you count the guilt from wasting hours of time that could have been spent on other things.
I headed to work to drop off all my haunted house stuff. Yeah, that's why I had the van loaded. I like to think that I just can set up a haunted house anywhere I want this time of year, but the fact of the matter is that my team is doing another haunted house at work this year on Friday and I wanted to get all of the stuff here and do a little bit of setup work with no one around. I had that done by about 6:30 and headed home for dinner, email checking, cleaning the kitchen and then bed.
So, yeah, really good weekend. Looking forward to Friday.
