Weekend
Monique and I went up to NH this weekend for Brent and Erin's wedding.
We took the opportunity to visit with my dad, or at least try to. Dad was asleep when we got there and I tried hard to rouse him. He finally opened his eyes and there was about 10 seconds of recognition and alertness before he rolled his head back over and fell asleep. I went and talke to the nurses and they said he'd been quiet at breakfast that morning, but that the one thing he said was, "Where's Richard or Robert?" The nurse couldn't remember the exact name so I helpfully said, "Rick?" and she said, "Yeah that's it". So I introduced myself since she was new and I had only introduced myself prior as Bud's son. She said that some days he just wants to sleep and that this must be one of them.
I decided to try rousing him again one more time just for good measure. Same results. I checked with Randy later and he said that usually the nursing home calls him when he has one of his episodes that leaves him like that for a day, but it was the weekend and the staff is different on weekends. Bottom line is we didn't get to visit after all. It's too bad because I get up there so rarely these days. :-(
We knew we'd be having a late dinner because of the time of the reception so we grabbed midafternoon subs at my moms favorite sub restaurant and went to visit her. We brought her a sub as a surprise and ate with her. We had a limited time before we had to go to Randy's to change for the wedding.
We shared some pleasant chat time with Randy and Tracy and then changed and off to the wedding reception. Wow, I never expected to see all the people that were there. It was a very pleasant surprise and I enjoyed (as much as possible) many conversations. The only down side was the music. The songs themselves were pretty cool. Apparently the bride and groom are into the oldies, that is to say, the songs of my generation. :-p However, the DJ apparently doesn't know where the volume button is and thus couldn't turn it down from 'blow your eardrums out' loud. We were almost as far as possible from the speakers and had to shout to be heard in conversation. I left very drained and with a bit of a headache.
We drove to Rochester and slept at Monique's mom's house. Sunday morning we spent a very pleasant few hours with her mom. We took her out to lunch and then headed home.
Monique's PICC line was bothering her most of the way home and by the time we got home it was hurting her a lot, enough she wanted to go the ER and get it looked at. Unfortunately, this was 20 minutes before I was due to have people for flute choir rehearsal, so Monique had me stay home, feeling it wasn't necessary that I go with her. I was a bit skeptical about this if it bothered her enough to go the hospital on a Sunday night, but it was far too late for me cancel as some people travel more than 20 minutes to get there.
Rehearsal itself went well. There were only 5 of us and we had to do some part shuffling to make things work out most of the time, but it was fun and sounded pretty good. I have hope that maybe the fall season will work out after all.
I talked to Monique immediately following rehearsal. She'd seen nurses and one doctor already at that point and was thinking they might keep her overnight. They had taken blood, were checking counts and doing a culture. I talked to her again a couple hours later, still waiting for the second doctor. There was talk of maybe removing the PICC line and putting her on a regular IV. After she promised to call with more news if any, I went to bed. Monique came in around 5:00. They just changed the dressing for now. She's going to hopefully see her regular doctor today. She went to bed as I was leaving. We'll see what happens from here.
It's only a little over a week before she sees the doctor in NY City about the underlying problem. With any luck this won't be a bigger problem or turn this into an emergency situation.
Happy Monday everyone. Have a great week.
