Happy Independence Day
Jul. 4th, 2010 05:24 pmI've been on Windows XP until yesterday. i bought Windows 7 months ago and couldn't find the time to do the installation until this weekend. That, and with all the 7V work, I didn't dare do the upgrade for fear of losing access to my computer at a critical time. So anyway, I decided yesterday to just bite the bullet and do it.
Thank goodness for my external hard drive. While it may have taken hours to back up everything, it was completely worthy it. Granted, I've spent most of the day reinstalling updates and software, but the external drive allowed me to use the built in migration tools to at least save almost all my program settings and bring them over.
All itn all, so far (because I'm not done yet), it's been pretty smooth. The only real pain in the ass program has been iTunes. Migrating my library over has been a royal PIA. But even Office behaved itself and all my settings in all the programs have stayed intact, even pointing to the right directories which have a different structure in Windows 7.
As to the new OS, I'll reserve judgement until I've learned it a little better. It's got a few cool features. Nothing so far that makes me go, "OMG, I can't believe I waited this long". However, the machine is acting a lot better. I don't know if it's the new OS or the fact that my machine just basically got a clean slate.
