Birthday trip the sequel
Jan. 30th, 2013 01:03 pmI talked about Monique's 50th birthday trip to the casinos last week. This week we had her birthday celebration, part II.
This time it was a trip to NYC where we met up with the sister that couldn't make the previous weekend's celebration. We went into NYC Monday night and stayed at the Marriott in Times Square. Tuesday we headed over to where the Daily Show with Jon Stewart is taped. We waited outside through the appropriate lines to get tickets and then ate lunch and drank wine (or in my case coffee) at a cafe while we awaited the lines to actually get into the show.
The taping itself was interesting. There was a warm-up comedian who very actively got the crowd involved, sometimes painfully so. This was definitely not the kind of comedian you wanted to draw his attention. When he said laugh, or holler or stand up and cheer or uncross your arms, you did it or you were the object of ridicule in front of the whole audience. Don't get me wrong, he was funny, as long as you weren't his target.
Jon Stewart was pretty funny. He came out after the comdian and did a question and answer session with the audience. Watching it being taped is much like watching it on TV except you can't hear Jon quite as well. It's also easy to watch the monitors during the clips of other people and forget to look back at the person you're there to see in-person. Overall, it was a pretty decent experience.
We went to the restaurant on top of the hotel after, a 360 degree revolving restaurant 47 stories above Times Square. The view was quite spectacular. The bill was impressive. The food was almost as impressive. Then again, I'm not a fancy food sort of guy, so I would have been just as happy with a $25 hamburger if such a thing had been available. Monique had a great time and that's all that matters to me.
Then we went back to our room and played Scrabble with Monique's sister and brother-in-law to finish off the evening. Up this morning at 4:30 to catch a 5:55 train to be at work before 8:30.
Now back to the grind. Man, one day out of work can really make your work week painful.
