I need you today, oh Mandy!
Sep. 18th, 2007 10:32 amSo what does Barry Manilow have to do with anything to make me feel like singing this particular day? Nothing really. So why am I singing a Barry Manilow song? Well, it goes like this.
My GPS comes on an SD card that works on my Palm Treo 650. Of all the voices it has, I really like the voice named Mandy and that's my default direction giver (Oh Mandy, well you came and you gave without taking...)
A couple weeks ago, at the last NERO event, I dropped my Treo and didn't notice that the SD card must have popped out, so I have been without my GPS for a bit. (...but I sent you away, oh Mandy) :-(
I have been struggling with tech support to try and either buy a replacement card from them or get the program downloaded from my install DVD to another blank SD card. This is a process that involves the Treo, a computer with their custom installation software and web connectivity, a DVD, and a USB SD card reader. I have probably spent 6 - 8 hours working on this, trying everything tech support has told me to try and in many variations hoping to make it work. I have formatted SD cards on my Treo and via the PC. I have downloaded all or just some of the maps multiple times. Every time a map is loaded, it causes everything on the card to become scrambled or encrypted.
I've begged them to just sell (not give) me a card with the program already loaded as I've easily spent 6 times the value of it in my time. After last night's latest attempts where the tech guy gave up and told me to try finding one on eBay, Amazon and a couple other options, I decided to think like the tech support guy I am. We had addressed almost everything as the problem, the DVD, the card, the Treo, their software, but through careful testing ruled them all out. Then it occurred to me we hadn't ruled out the SD card reader as the problem. After all, it was being used to install the app to the card, I changed out the card reader and it worked the first time around.
I've now activated the software on the Treo and it's working like a dream (and I need you today, oh Mandy!). Now all I need to do is actually test it on the way home tonight. Woo-hoo!
