Weekend excitement

We headed up to Marlborough MA Friday night for a weekend with Barbara and Dave McGill,
jjmarika's parents. Of course, no weekend of this nature can start without snags. My darling son forgot his tickets to Saturday's show and had to backtrack to go get them. This cost us about 2 hours of time, so our dinner plans with Barbara and Dave were shot and we spent much less time with them than planned.
Saturday was a slow, lazy start with Monique cooking breakfast for everyone. We enjoyed a long, casual breakfast out on their porch.
We made it to Boston by 1:30 for the 2:00 showing of Wicked. The show was magnificent and just as good as the first two times when we saw it in NY. The only downside to it was the sound system. For some reason, whenever the chorus would sing, the sound would be a little in and out making it difficult to make out the words. For me who has the CD memorized, it was no big deal. For Barbara and Dave, it meant struggling to understand. I was of course free to marvel over aspects I hadn't focused on before, like some of the choreography. I hadn't previously appreciated how much of it there was or how good. I was especially impressed when they were dancing to a 5/8 meter in "Thank Goodness". The leads were both wonderful, amazing voices, great acting. I think I liked Elphaba better than when I saw it played by the original (Idina Menzel), though no one will ever outshine Kristin Chenowith as Glinda.
We grabbed lunch/dinner after the show at a Vietnamese restaurant. I was a little nervous over this choice but went with the flow. I'm glad I kept an open mind on this. Despite reservations, even after looking at the menu, the food was delicious. I'm still not sure what most of it was, but it was really good.
We made it to Randy's for the bardic. The poetry reading was already under way. I listened to a bit of that, but then decided I wanted to mingle a bit with friends I don't often see before getting into the music portion of the evening. I ended up sitting under the bar counter for most of the evening enjoying the company of Kara, a lady I have spent almost no time with outside of LARPing. It was truly delightful.
JJ and I performed an old standard of our, "The Three Captains" for two flutes. I was hoping we might get one more in, but some of my party was ready to leave before that happened. Just as well, as I didn't realize how tired I was. I don't think I was awake 60 seconds after my head hit the pillow.
Sunday morning was more time spent with David and Barbara. I had hoped we might get to Brimfield to help Rachel, but the day just didn't play out that way. As it was, I barely made it home in time for the flute choir rehearsal that I was running in my home. Several of the flute choir members actually beat me there. Rehearsal was fantastic though. We ran a few pieces that are actually performance ready already. Now all I have to do is find a performance venue.
